I was asked by MOCA Jax to share some thoughts on how the pandemic has affected my practice and what I’m doing during this time. It’s always a challenge to produce a video, even more so one about yourself. I decided to run with one take and not agonize over the task (we have enough to agonize over these days). Here’s what I came up with. If you haven’t been to my studio in a while, at least you’ll get a little tour. Thanks for viewing!
MOCA Jacksonville Studio Sessions series is a virtual experience where artists invite you into their studio to share about their experience and work. Our current studio session is with Doug Eng, an artist based in Jacksonville whose studio is located in the CoRK Arts District. He is a photographer and installation artist working with themes of environmental awareness; much of his subject matter focuses on Northeastern Florida’s wetlands. He has worked with environmental organizations such as The North Florida Land Trust to help protect natural resources and historic places of North Florida.
Eng went to college at Cornell University to study structural engineering and architecture receiving both his BS and MEng degrees. His fluid natural landscapes seemingly oppose his engineering background, but photography became a perfect medium for Eng to combine his love of natural forms and structured methods.
His work has been exhibited locally as well as in the southeast. He has won six International Photograph Awards and two of his projects were featured in LensWork Magazine. Eng has been working with MOCA for many years documenting our permanent collection and exhibitions. Many of the photographs our website and in our publications were taken by him.
